Is AI Going to Kill the Hourly Wage?
Midjourney
In a study by the USC Annenberg Center, 88% of PR leaders believe AI will positively impact the speed and efficiency of tasks, and 72% say it will help reduce workloads. This sounds super exciting for lawyers, consultants, and PR folks who usually charge by the hour…right?
Let's talk about how lawyers, for example, usually charge by the hour. Imagine an attorney working on a legal case. Under the traditional hourly business model, they bill clients for every hour spent on research, meetings, court appearances, and so on. The more hours they log, the more they earn. It's a system that can sometimes incentivize taking longer on tasks, as more hours mean more revenue. Now, what if AI comes into play and helps them get things done faster and smarter? Instead of charging for time, they might start charging for the actual value delivered.
But here's where it gets tricky…
Clients might love the new approach because they're paying for results, not hours. But, attorneys and other charge-by-hour professionals may begin to scratch their heads because the faster they work, the less they earn. It's a paradox; the current model rewards taking time, while AI encourages efficiency. In 2022, the average PR person billed over $400K a year. With AI, the number of billable hours could change a lot, potentially reducing earnings.
Firms may drag their feet in adopting AI because it messes with their revenue model. The traditional model is simple: more hours equals more money. But their clients might just go ahead and use AI themselves. So, agencies will have to offer something more valuable than just time. They'll have to come up with killer strategies and guidance. It's not just about cranking out press releases anymore; it's about delivering real value. This shift from time-based to value-based billing leads to an even bigger change.
@justinfineberg You should still consult a real lawyer, but this definitely helps you move quicker… #gpt4 #ai #lawyers #legal #openai
The bottom line is that AI is turning the traditional hourly billing model on its head. It's pushing businesses to think about what they're really offering and how they're making money. Instead of being rewarded for taking longer, they'll need to focus on efficiency and quality. It's not just about working faster; it's about working smarter and focusing on what really matters. It's a whole new ball game, and it's going to be fascinating to see how it all plays out. So, what do you think?

AI Watching You Drive?
Midjourney
The city of Cornwall in the UK now has a camera on the side of the road, watching every car that passes by, catching people using their phones or not wearing seatbelts. It's not just a camera, though; it's an intelligent system that can analyze images and spot violations. In just three days, it caught almost 300 drivers. Can you believe it?
What does this really mean for the average driver? Imagine you're cruising down the highway maybe glancing at your phone, and suddenly—flash! The camera's caught you. You might not even notice it, but that one moment is frozen in time, and soon enough, a letter arrives at your door. It's like a scene from a thriller, where the unsuspecting character gets caught in a web they never saw coming. It's a game-changer, my friend, and it's happening right now.
This isn't just about catching people breaking the law; it's a major milestone in how we manage traffic and keep our roads safe. Think about it: human officers can't be everywhere, but this AI system can monitor multiple locations, working tirelessly day and night. It's like having a superhero on the roads, fighting for justice and safety. And the best part? It's just the beginning. Who knows what else this technology could do in the future?
Now, let's talk money. This is a smart investment for cities. Imagine all the resources saved by automating traffic monitoring, and think about the fines collected from those violations. That's extra cash for the city, money that can be used for better roads, schools, parks—you name it! It's like hitting the jackpot, but for the whole community. This AI camera system is a symbol of progress and a glimpse into a future where technology makes our lives better in ways we can't even imagine yet.

Arthur, a machine learning monitoring startup, has released Arthur Bench, an open-source tool designed to help users find the best Language Model for specific data sets. The tool allows users to test and compare different LLMs, such as Anthropic and OpenAI, using various prompts that are likely to be used in their particular applications. Arthur Bench is available as an open-source project, with a SaaS version planned for those who need more extensive testing or prefer not to manage the open-source version.
📷 PhotoDater: AI's Time Travel Unlocks Secrets of Historical Photos
An AI-powered tool called PhotoDater has been introduced by MyHeritage, an Israel-based genealogy platform, to estimate the year when old photographs were taken. The algorithm, trained on tens of thousands of definitively dated historical photos from 1860 to 1990, identifies characteristics like clothing, hairstyles, and furniture to determine the time period of the photograph. The tool provides date estimations within five years of the actual date around 60% of the time and is seen as a valuable asset in family history research and understanding the past.

🇨🇳 China's Tencent Unveils Hunyuan: A Bold Step in Global AI Supremacy Race
Chinese tech giant Tencent has announced plans to launch its proprietary AI model, Hunyuan, later this year, positioning it among the best in China. The model, tested across gaming, advertising, cloud computing, and financial technology, represents Tencent's ambition to challenge Western AI leaders. The announcement follows Alibaba's release of two open-sourced AI models, highlighting China's intensified efforts to surpass the U.S. in AI innovation. The country's focus on AI aligns with predictions that the technology could contribute over $15 trillion to the global economy annually by 2030, and Tencent's move adds fuel to the competitive race between Beijing and Washington.
