Cosmic Breakthrough
August 9, 2023
Good morning. As Montgomery grapples with a riverfront brawl that's made waves, perhaps they could borrow Spotify's AI DJ to set the mood with some calming tunes next time. After all, if it can personalize music for 50 markets around the world, surely it can find the right track to keep pontoon boat owners and riverboat captains in harmony.

AI's Cosmic Breakthrough: Meet HelioLinc3D, Earth's New Asteroid Sentinel
Midjourney
Meet HelioLinc3D, an AI algorithm that can spot what human eyes often miss.
Its first claim to fame? Detecting a 600-foot-long asteroid known as 2022 SF289, set to approach Earth within a hair's breadth (in cosmic terms) of 140,000 miles. This is no small feat, especially for an algorithm working with the still-under-construction Vera Rubin Observatory in Chile.
How does HelioLinc3D work? While conventional telescopes require four images per night to detect asteroids, Rubin and HelioLinc3D only need two, and they don't even have to be taken on consecutive nights. It’s the equivalent of a digital Sherlock Holmes, scanning the night sky with a magnifying glass, finding clues in places where others might not think to look.
No longer will asteroids sneak up on us like uninvited guests at a galactic party, well… at least that’s the hope ☄️. Researchers see vast potential in space missions, where HelioLinc could guide spacecraft through uncharted territories, and in asteroid mining, where it could identify valuable resources. HelioLinc could unlock new frontiers in space exploration, foster scientific innovation, and pave the way to a future where the mysteries of our universe are within grasp.
INVESTING IN AI
SoftBank's Ripple Effect: A Financial Twist with Global Reach
Midjourney
SoftBank has been a name synonymous with daring investments and bold strategies. A multinational conglomerate holding company led by Masayoshi Son, SoftBank's diverse portfolio has often made headlines. But this time, the news is of an unexpected consecutive quarterly loss, painting a complex picture of ambition, challenges, and resilience.
The Vision Funds, SoftBank's ambitious investment arms, posted a quarterly investment loss of $91 million, a significant improvement from the staggering $20 billion loss a year ago. Cumulatively, the losses across the three funds total $6.3 billion as of June 30 after a decline in positions like Alibaba, T-Mobile, and many others.
SoftBank's CFO, Yoshimitsu Goto, expressed cautious optimism, stating that the company is "carefully and slowly moving back to investment activities," with a keen focus on AI.
Here’s what Lydia Jett, Managing Partner at Softbank has to say 👇
SoftBank's losses might seem distant from the average consumer. But Softbank’s investment decisions significantly influence the products and services that end up reaching the consumer market. If Softbank and other large funds employ a more conservative investment approach, there’s potential for a decreased rate of developing new technologies, affecting the pace of the new tech that consumers are always hungry for.
SoftBank's recent losses are not just a corporate saga but a narrative that intertwines with the lives of investors, entrepreneurs, tech professionals, and even everyday consumers. A reflection of the volatile yet exciting nature of the tech world, where ambition meets reality, and decisions have widespread effects.
Will AI be SoftBanks’ savior, or will it lead to a further loss of billions?

Disney's AI Task Force: Revolutionizing Entertainment, Cutting Cost
Walt Disney has formed a task force to explore artificial intelligence (AI) applications across its entertainment conglomerate, including theme parks, studios, and advertising. The initiative, launched earlier this year, aims to develop in-house AI applications and collaborate with startups, with 11 job openings seeking AI or machine learning expertise. The move is seen as a way to control soaring production costs and enhance customer interactions, but it has also ignited concerns among Hollywood writers and actors who view AI as a threat to jobs.
Google's Project IDX: Revolutionizing Coding with AI-Enabled Browsers
Google has unveiled Project IDX, an AI-powered browser-based development environment designed for building full-stack web and multiplatform applications. Utilizing Visual Studio Code as its foundation, IDX integrates with Google's AI model Codey, offering smart code completion and a chatbot to assist developers with coding queries. As a cloud-based IDE, Project IDX also integrates with Google's Firebase Hosting and Google Cloud Functions, and it allows developers to import existing code from GitHub, promising a new era of productivity and code quality.
Spotify's AI DJ Goes Global: Personalized Music in 50 Markets
Spotify is expanding its AI-powered DJ feature to 50 markets around the world, six months after its debut in North America. Available through the Spotify mobile app, the AI DJ personalizes users' listening experience with curated music selections and synthetic voice commentary, providing context and light-hearted banter related to specific songs and artists. Initially launched in the U.S. and Canada, and later extended to the U.K. and Ireland, the feature will remain in beta and will be offered in English in the new markets, including Sweden, Australia, New Zealand, Ghana, Nigeria, Pakistan, Singapore, and South Africa.
NVIDIA Partners with HuggingFace: A Leap in Generative AI Models
Jim Fan announced NVIDIA's partnership with HuggingFace, expressing love for the open-source software community. The collaboration will make NVIDIA DGX Cloud accessible with HuggingFace, allowing the creation and customization of generative AI models for enterprises. The partnership will leverage NVIDIA's technology, including NVIDIA nForce3 Pro for networking and NVIDIA Base Command as the operating system for DGX Cloud, to power massive scaling in AI research and applications.
