Gemini's Election Silence
March 13, 2024
Good morning. A woman pumped her way to a felony charge by exploiting a gas station "glitch" for $28,000 in free fuel. Maybe it's time AI took over gas station security—because humans are getting too clever, or perhaps the current AI was too busy calculating the optimal route to Mars.

Reflecting on AI's Impact: A Bold Statement at SXSW 2024
A Stirring Debate on AI
At SXSW 2024, filmmakers Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, known collectively as "DANIELS," captivated audiences with a candid critique of artificial intelligence's role in society. Having gained acclaim for their Oscar-winning film "Everything Everywhere All at Once," the duo used their platform to explore AI's dual nature—its potential to solve critical issues like cancer and climate change against its capacity to exacerbate systemic flaws such as income inequality and a pervasive sense of undervaluation in modern capitalism.
Challenging the Narrative
The filmmakers' discussion emphasized the need to reassess values in an AI-dominated world, warning of the technology's integration into a system already criticized for contributing to climate change and social disparity. Kwan's reflections on how social media, initially seen as a tool for connection, ultimately led to increased isolation, served as a cautionary parallel for AI's trajectory. The conversation extended an invitation to consider how AI could be used not just for profit but to enhance human value and quality of life genuinely.
A Call for Conscious Utilization
Echoing the sentiment, Scheinert urged the audience to deliberate on their motives for employing AI, challenging the narrative of AI as an unequivocally positive force devoid of side effects. The filmmakers' insights underscored a critical juncture in the technological epoch, advocating for a thoughtful approach to AI deployment that prioritizes human welfare over wealth accumulation for the few.
🛡️ DoorDash Launches AI Tool SafeChat+ to Combat Verbal Abuse
DoorDash has introduced SafeChat+, an AI-powered tool designed to mitigate verbal abuse in interactions between customers and delivery personnel within the app. This advanced feature automatically identifies offensive language, offering options to report incidents and, depending on the situation, contact support or cancel orders without affecting delivery ratings. With the capacity to analyze over 1,400 messages per minute across multiple languages, including English, French, and Mandarin, SafeChat+ represents a significant enhancement over its predecessor, SafeChat, by utilizing more sophisticated technology capable of detecting subtleties and nuances beyond specific keywords. This initiative is part of DoorDash's broader commitment to safety, which includes the SafeDash toolkit for emergency situations, aiming to further reduce the incidence of verbal abuse and ensure a safer platform for all users.
🗣️ Deepgram Unveils Aura, Bridging Human-like Voices to AI Agents
Deepgram has launched Aura, a real-time text-to-speech API designed to enable developers to create conversational AI agents with highly realistic voice models. These agents, supported by large language models (LLMs), are aimed at customer service applications in call centers and other customer-facing roles. Aura stands out by combining human-like voice quality with extremely fast response times at a competitive cost. Priced at $0.015 per 1,000 characters, Aura seeks to offer a cost-effective solution for businesses needing real-time voice AI capabilities. The service features about a dozen voice models trained with datasets created in collaboration with voice actors, all developed in-house. Aura's introduction represents a significant step in making conversational AI more accessible and practical for a wide range of applications. Check it out 👇️
🗳️ Google Limits Gemini AI's Responses on Election Queries to Safeguard Information Integrity
Google has implemented restrictions on its AI chatbot, Gemini, preventing it from answering questions about upcoming elections in any country where such events are imminent. This decision reflects Google's caution towards the potential misuse of generative AI in the electoral process and its commitment to preventing the dissemination of inaccurate or misleading information. Queries about political parties, candidates, or related topics now prompt a message encouraging users to use Google Search instead. Despite these measures, some users have managed to circumvent the restrictions through typographical errors in their queries. Google's move aligns with broader concerns about the integrity of election-related information. It follows closely with regulatory actions in countries like India, which recently required tech firms to obtain government permission before launching new AI models.

Round and round, the carousel spins,
Children's laughter, where the fun begins.
Up and down, on painted horses, they ride,
With each turn, joy they can't hide.
