mazon led the AI voice race with Alexa's debut a decade ago, but needed an upgrade to stay competitive. Now, it’s rolling one out to all users.

On Wednesday, Amazon announced that Alexa+, its AI-powered Alexa, is moving out of early access and into general availability in the US. The upgrade aims to offer a more seamless experience for users, with it being smarter, more conversational and actionable using a new architecture powered by models from both Amazon Nova and Anthropic.

The unlimited Alexa+ experience is available in the US for $19.99 per month. This includes all of the capabilities, across Alexa-enabled devices, Alexa.com, and the app.

  • Amazon Prime users get unlimited access (including all the perks above) at no additional cost.
  • The new free tier allows users to try the Alexa+ chat experience via Alexa.com and the Alexa app. This experience is limited.
  • To get started, all Prime users have to do is say “Alexa, upgrade to Alexa+,” while non-Prime users can visit the site and start chatting.

When it was first announced, Amazon touted that Alexa+ would serve as an agentic assistant that could orchestrate advanced actions across “tens of thousands of services and devices.” However, when it did release in early access, many users expressed being underwhelmed, as the biggest highlight was being able to interrupt Alexa when talking to it. The tech giant said it applied the feedback that it has been collecting in early access, such as customer use cases, in this release. Whether it was effective is yet to be seen.

Our Deeper View

Since the term AI agent first emerged, companies have been racing to create an assistant that can truly perform end-to-end actions for users. One of the earliest examples was the Rabbit R1, which notoriously failed to make good on its promises to agentically carry out tasks for users. Nearly two years later, no one has delivered a functioning product. If Amazon succeeds with Alexa+ and its proprietary Nova models, it will leapfrog ahead of competitors. This is especially crucial for Amazon as competent AI voice assistants continue to pop up on the market.
